No less than 64 individuals lost their lives in a police operation cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's past.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. Over 80 suspects were detained.

Fierce clashes broke out when approximately 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with shooting, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the security action, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods near the city's international airport is seen as the central command of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.

Local authorities stated no less than 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Resident Accounts

Residents have compared the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Transport routes stay blocked across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the raid, together with multiple guns.

Operation Background

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be members of a faction from the northern region who are presently concealed in Rio de Janeiro.

Broader Context

Major law enforcement actions are not uncommon in Brazil before important worldwide conferences in the South American nation.

The United Nations climate conference COP30 is scheduled in the city of Belem in the north in late autumn.
