Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.
He stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward following their advancement".
Summers, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released communications revealed that the economist communicated with Epstein until the day before his 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood Summers' determination to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," the organization stated.
Congressional Action
This announcement follows after the entire Congress of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to endorse a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to disclose its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will subsequently head to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has indicated he intends to endorse the bill, after changing his position on the subject following pressure from his followers.

A group of Epstein-connected correspondence made public by the House Oversight Committee recently mentioned multiple prominent individuals in the financier's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.
The messages showed that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often trying to connect the official to influential international personalities.

After the correspondence were released with the general audience, he said he took "total ownership for my poor judgment to continue corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he hoped "to reestablish trust and mend connections with the individuals most important to me".
Career Background
The professor held leadership roles under Democratic administrations; functioning as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He headed the institution from five years and continues to be a professor there. When announcing his departure from public roles recently on Monday, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in Washington where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that he was not connected with the group.
The former official joined the leadership of the AI company, which makes ChatGPT, in last year - following a defeated move to oust its chief executive the company leader.
