Rob Edwards along with Gary O'Neil represent the initial names under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the squad's 10-match winless start to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - both of who have historic links to the club - are part of the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the former Luton Town head coach - who played over a century of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a strong candidate for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves board as they begin the search of hiring a fresh manager.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a shock choice given he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed which means the club would not be required to pay any buyout fee.
